My artwork looks like a collection of geometrical shapes on a black background. The subject matter is a dark arcade with a bright corridor of machines. The title is “Cocaine”. The most prominent elements are space, form, and value. The media of my piece is soft pastels on black paper. To create my work I used rulers, perspective, and masking tape to shape my shapes. I got my inspiration from neon signs. No issues are expressed, and it displays the emotions of focused, empty, and loneliness. I reached my goals as an artist because they were to make a minimalist piece with a good mix of contrasting brightness's. I did not really learn anything through this project, it was practice. It is exactly how I imagined it would be except not quite as realistic. It will most likely not influence any future artworks.
Collaboration definitely made this piece more interesting for me. It added the emotions of emptiness with the addition of the abyss illustrated below the machines. It benefitted me because it added aspect I would not have thought of. The idea of an abyss is very different from my retro dark arcade. At first I did not like how Josh was adding lines to increase the depth of the work but it grew on my. I tried my best and succeeded to accept the changes as happy little accidents. I overcame the graphite lines by recommending to Josh to draw over them with white charcoal. This ended up looking better and I am pleased.
I am an aspiring artist who is interested in learning and exploring art. I always try to do new things and expand my artistic horizon. I don't intend on a career in art so the more broadly I can learn the better.
