My artwork is a combination of four prints. Two thick and two thin. The subject matter is a character from the videogame Grim Fandango. The title is “Salvador” and I used the elements of space and value the most. To create my print I used carving tools on a linoleum block then applied printing ink onto it, then applied the block to drawing paper. I was inspired to create this by the famous photo of Guerrillero Heroico, Andy Warhol, and the videogame Grim Fandango. I reached my goals on this project because I like the way it looks and that’s always my goal. My initial vision for this project was to make it look more pop-arty, and it came out as a collection of prints which I am not as happy with, but nonetheless I am fine with it. I have done printing before, so i’m not sure if this project will influence my future works that much.
My piece is a literal interpretation of the Earth’s appearance. The title is “Outside looking In” and I used blending texturing for the terrain and freeform texturing for the clouds. I created my art by outlining the land and the boundaries of the Earth with sharpie, then I filled in the land, oceans, and space with oil pastels. All of the oil pastel is blended and I used regular white poster paper. I was inspired to create this art by my passion for maps and geography. The purpose of this piece is not to address a social topic, but to evoke the feeling of exploration and discovery for me especially because this was my first time using oil pastels. My goal for this piece was to explore with oil pastels and become more comfortable with them. I accomplished this goal because I learned techniques on how to erase what I don’t want, and I also learned that what I initially place on the paper is not the final outcome because blending can be about 50% of the process. I think this project came out great because I like the way it looks. Despite my initial vision, this piece came out much more literal than I intended but I wouldn’t have altered it if I didn’t think a literal representation would be better. This project should affect my future endeavours because it reinforced my ability to use oil pastels and general blending.

Ethan JackowskiI am an aspiring artist who is interested in learning and exploring art. I always try to do new things and expand my artistic horizon. I don't intend on a career in art so the more broadly I can learn the better. Archives
